Katie Byrne is a journalist who works for Independent News and Media. She is perhaps most well-known and well regarded for her column ‘What Katie Did Next’, which featured in The Herald newspaper, also available online. In recent days Katie has secured a new column in the Irish Independent’s Weekend magazine, a continuation of her Herald lifestyle column, but with a twist. Katie wasn’t long going about re-branding the art of column writing and putting her own stamp on things with her first opinion piece on…you guessed it, the art of column writing. The article ‘Katie Byrne: Ego and the art of the columnist’, which kicked off her column series, dealt with the trials and tribulations of staying relevant as a column writer, while also detailing how column writers act, think, and develop ideas. In this meta opener, in what hopes to be a very interesting journey for readers, Katie Byrne wiped our minds clean of any pre-conceived ideas about the art of column writing. She lays bare the facts and opens herself to criticism, as any good opinion writer should. The most recent article in her column for Weekend magazine is titled ‘Katie Byrne… Chat up? please just shut up’, which was published on the 16th of August. If you haven’t guessed already it’s about the evolutionary stages of the ‘chat-up’. It’s riveting stuff. In her first column Katie talks about column writing. But how does it differ from feature writing? Episode 5 of Mediaflash can help you out with this predicament!
