“Are you Sitting Comfortably?”: Mary Raftery fund host event

The Ethics and Documentary Film-Making seminar hosted by the Mary Raftery Journalism fund will take place on October 9th at the Irish Film Institute in Dublin. The day-long seminar entitled Are you Sitting Comfortably?, is set to be chaired by top Irish broadcasters; Miriam OCallaghan, Keelin Shanley and Olivia OLeary, will feature a screening of Mary Rafterys final work The two-part documentary series, documenting the history of Irelands psychiatric hospitals, revealed the abhorrent conditions patients were forced to endure whilst also telling the remarkable story of Hanna Greally, a survivor by all accounts, who emerged from a psychiatric hospital some 20 years later to share her story of life- Behind the Walls. Octobers event will offer people a very unique insight into the challenges that journalists and documentary makers face whilst also offering attendees the opportunity to examine their own practices and ideas in the context of an ever evolving digital environment. A number of discussions will take place on the day, some examining the relationship between the documentary maker and the subject while other will focus on the ethics around the management of personal material by documentary makers and the authored documentary versus agenda led film-making. Participants in these panel discussions will include Christopher Hird (Dartmouth Films), Colin Murphy (film-maker / journalist) and Janet Traynor (documentary-maker and journalist), Malachy Browne (Reported.ly), Dearbhla Glynn (filmmaker), Carl OBrien (journalist) and Tom Warren (Buzzfeed UK).
